Notton Parish Council

Notton Parish Council was established, like many others in England and Wales, by the Local Government Act 1894. Previous to that date administration at local level had been by the Justices of the Peace and by the Vestry meetings. The Council has the minute books from 1895 onwards but the earlier Vestry book of 1862 – 94 is missing.

Being a small Parish the Council’s activities are mostly limited to commenting on Planning matters and requesting action by the Wakefield Metropolitan District Council, particularly on highway matters. The Council does however maintain the play area on the Village Hall field, and maintains the Village Green and other small areas of land around the village. It administers the Allotments at the end of The Oval, and is occasionally able to have works carried out by means of grants from various bodies.

The Council raises money by a Precept on the Council Tax: the annual budget is currently about £6000, costing Council Tax payers on average around 15p in the pound.  This pays for the maintenance as above, and some minor works, and the salary of the (very) part-time Clerk.  The five Councillors, who are elected every four years, are unpaid.

The Council meets usually on the first Thursday of each month, at 7.30 in the Village Hall. There is no meeting in August. Meetings are open to the public and there is an opportunity before each meeting for people to put questions to the Council.  However if anyone has a problem that they would like the Council to try to help with it may be better to raise the matter with a Councillor or the Clerk beforehand so that some investigation or research can be done in advance of the meeting.

As Vice-Chair of the Parish Council I’d like to welcome the creation of this website and thank Colin Bryant for his hard work in setting it up. The website is a great way for residents to advertise events in the parish to the wider community and I’d encourage all parishioners to make use of it.

A Happy Christmas and New Year to you all.
