Music Licence for community buildings

An announcement affecting any community building that plays recorded
music has just come out:

An amendment to legislation introduced this year means that charity shops and
community groups will have to pay for licences to play recorded music from
January 2012. Music licensing authority PPL announces groups with incomes of
£10,000 or more will pay 1 per cent of their income, with the rest charged

The amendment
says public venues, including those used by charities and not-for-profit groups,
will need licences from PPL in order to play music from records, CDs, the radio
or television.

More nformation from the PPL website:

It will obviously affect things like dance sessions, keep fit etc – though sometimes the tutor may have their own
licence to cover wherever they go, so it would be worth checking. If you want to
know any more, please let me know.
